I converted a post from Classic to Block editor. Put the excerpt where it is to go, but it isn’t being truncated to the 30 characters like the classic post excerpt.
I only filled it in when I discovered the excerpt wasn’t showing, only the title. My first blocks post so wasn’t sure what was going on. I then filled in the excerpt and it showed up.
I’ve remove the excerpt and now as before, only the title is displaying. You can see it at the link posted above.
Yea, Gutenberg has a hard time making excerpts from nested content. I’m working on a way to get around it in GenerateBlocks, but haven’t found a good solution yet.
For now you might need to provide a manual excerpt which matches your desired length.
That was my hunch. The workflow I’m creating for working with Gutenberg is to start all content with a GB Container. In most cases followed with a GB Grid and go from there.
Yes, I start every page/post with a container set to full width.(for the current site I’m building. Then I build inside the container.
typically some thing like
Container
Headliner
Paragraph
Paragraph
Headliner
Grid (2 columns)
left column
Container

List

Buttons

This is typical it is what I used on this page which a converted classic edit post I converted to blocks in a screencast for the client. https://boulderrealestatenews.com/dev/home-in-boulder-colorado-for-under-300000/
For the time being I can live with adding the excerpt manually. Spend the time on the show posts block version, I think it is a better use of your time.
