ParticipantI am working on new website. The client wants full length posts for most posts with the option to shorten lengthy posts. The WordPress “More” block doesn’t seem to work when using WP Show Posts. I tried adding an excerpt for the post (using the excerpt option in the Block editor) but the entire post still displays.
Any suggestions to get the “More” block working with WP Show Posts?

ModeratorHi,
Have you tried setting the Content Type to “Excerpt” on WPSP list’s Settings > Content?

ParticipantThanks for your reply.
As I stated in my original entry: “The client wants full length posts for most posts, with the option to shorten lengthy posts.” Setting to Excerpts results in every post being an excerpt, something the client doesn’t want.
I’ll try and find another posts display plugin that works with the More Block.

ParticipantThe More Block works fine with the Display Posts plugin. This plugin lacks most of the options that WP Show Posts provides. Plus, you have to add the parameters you want in the shortcode and style it with external CSS, but it recognizes the More Block and formats the post accordingly.

Ah that’s right my bad.
Can you tell a bit more on how the content is structured? Is it nested, meaning the content is placed within a container layout like GenerateBlocks? Is it using classic editor?
WP Show Posts or even the default WordPress blog list is known to have issues when it is nested. At the moment, there’s no known fix for this.
Else, the Read more block should work to limit the excerpt display even when “Full Post” is specified on the Content Type as shown in this demo site where you can see some posts with trimmed (with read more block) and others that are long (w/o read more block).
Let us know.

ParticipantHi Elvin,
No, the content isn’t nested in any way. After reading your comments and looking at the demo site, I had an idea as to what the problem could be. The development/staging site was in “Maintenance Mode.” I suspected that this could be part of the problem. I turned off Maintenance Mode and the excerpt displayed as it should. There was still one issue, there was no Read More text or button. I went into the WP Show Posts editor and noticed that there was no text in the Read More box. I entered the words Read More and the button (with text) now displays.
It appears that the issue all along was the site being in Maintenance Mode. I’m so glad that this issue is solved so I can use WP Show Posts on this website. I use WP Show Posts to route specific content to specific pages by category. This way, clients can have Authors add content to pages without having to give them a higher role that would allow page editing.
Thanks for your help.

No problem. 🙂

ParticipantThanks Simon. Your solution works great using the Aside post format for the short posts. This will require some extra training for the client, but it’s better than having the Read More button display on short posts where the More block or <!–more–> tag is not used.
I still see this issue as something that WP Show Posts should handle automatically when the More block or <!–more–> tag is not present.
