    Thanks Simon. Your solution works great using the Aside post format for the short posts. This will require some extra training for the client, but it’s better than having the Read More button display on short posts where the More block or <!–more–> tag is not used.

    I still see this issue as something that WP Show Posts should handle automatically when the More block or <!–more–> tag is not present.

    Thanks Simon!

    It occurred to me that experienced WordPress users may be used to clicking on the title to load the full post as an option to the Read more button. I changed the CSS to allow this.

    .wp-show-posts .format-aside .wpsp-read-more {
        display:none;
    }

    .wp-show-posts .format-aside .wp-show-posts-image a,
    .wp-show-posts .format-aside .wp-show-posts-entry-title a {
        pointer-events: none;
        color: var(--head-grey);
    }

    I still hope that this issue is addressed in a future release of WP Show Posts.

    Hi Elvin,

    No, the content isn’t nested in any way. After reading your comments and looking at the demo site, I had an idea as to what the problem could be. The development/staging site was in “Maintenance Mode.” I suspected that this could be part of the problem. I turned off Maintenance Mode and the excerpt displayed as it should. There was still one issue, there was no Read More text or button. I went into the WP Show Posts editor and noticed that there was no text in the Read More box. I entered the words Read More and the button (with text) now displays.

    It appears that the issue all along was the site being in Maintenance Mode. I’m so glad that this issue is solved so I can use WP Show Posts on this website. I use WP Show Posts to route specific content to specific pages by category. This way, clients can have Authors add content to pages without having to give them a higher role that would allow page editing.

    Thanks for your help.

    The More Block works fine with the Display Posts plugin. This plugin lacks most of the options that WP Show Posts provides. Plus, you have to add the parameters you want in the shortcode and style it with external CSS, but it recognizes the More Block and formats the post accordingly.

    Thanks for your reply.

    As I stated in my original entry: “The client wants full length posts for most posts, with the option to shorten lengthy posts.” Setting to Excerpts results in every post being an excerpt, something the client doesn’t want.

    I’ll try and find another posts display plugin that works with the More Block.

    I was incorrect. I cleared the cache and the post with the WP Block Button displays the button in WP Show Posts. The GenerateBlocks button does not display. Instead, the button text displays as a link.

    The site in question is a new client site under development. I can PM you a link, or I can set up the same page on one my experimental dev sites. Now that I have the WP Block Button working it’s no longer much of a problem.

    I just tried the WP Core Button Block and it didn’t work either. Well, it worked but much of the styling was gone. It appears that the Custom HTML block is my only option if I want buttons in WP Show Posts.

    Thanks Elvin,

    It’s a bit disappointing to learn that the two plugins from the same company don’t play well together. It is good to know it’s not something I did incorrectly.

    Tom,
    I talked with the website owner and explained excerpts to her. I also suggested that she use the More Tag (this is what I do when I have to preserve formatting). She has decided instead to use shorter excerpts to keep uniformity on the post pages. She is more at ease knowing that the full post still has all her formatting.

    Thanks for your support and for some great software. My website design and development projects go a lot more smoothly with GeneratePress.

    I installed the Advanced Excerpts plugin. It seems to have no effect on WP Show Posts listings. If excepts are selected in WP Show Posts there is no formatting. If full posts are selected then Advanced Excerpts has no effect and the full post is displayed.

    Thanks Tom!

    I’ll give Advanced Excerpts a try.

    I just found the answer. I didn’t have any posts with the Events or Front categories, just News and Resources. After adding the Events and Front categories to a several posts, they became available to WP ShowPosts.

    Resolved by adding wpsp_before_title hook to functions.php.

    /* CALENDAR DATE ICON */
    function calendar (){ ?>
    <div class="calendaricon">
    <? echo '<img src="https://myimage_url/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/cal_w_logo_starfleet.png" />'; ?>
    <div class="month"><? the_time('M') ?></div>
    <div class="day"><? the_time('j') ?></div>
    </div>
    <?
    }
    add_action('generate_before_entry_title', 'calendar');

    add_action('wpsp_before_title', 'calendar');

    Thanks Tom!

    Hi Tom,

    I usually have only one WP ShowPosts shortcode per page.

    I did a forced reinstall of WP ShowPosts. This may have been what fixed it. I installed GeneratePress with the Pro addon, and WP ShowPosts on a migrated database from a client site that was built in 2012. There is likely a lot of leftover clutter from old plugins in the database.

    Thanks for a great plugin!

    Mike
